- Avoid pre-washing
If you plan to store vegetables or fruits in the refrigerator, postpone washing them until immediately after use. The reason is that the added moisture from washing may make the fruit rot more quickly.
If you must wash vegetables or fruits first, allow them to dry well before putting them in the refrigerator.
- Store whole fruits and vegetables
Do not cut fruits before putting them in the refrigerator, because cut fruits and vegetables will rot more quickly. Remove only the roots and stems, but save the rest of the chopping process until cooking time.
If you plan to use the vegetables very soon, you can chop them first and keep them in a container inside the refrigerator. However, you should be aware that it will not last long fresh.
- Don’t store everything in the same place
Place leafy greens and herbs in the vegetable drawer and separate other fruits and vegetables on different shelves.
For example, you may want to store vegetables with a high water content separately from vegetables with a low water content. Keep in mind that storing different types of vegetables and fruits closely together may cause them to rot or wilt more quickly.
